Premature Deployment

This jumper experienced a reserve deployment immediately after diving out of a Twin Otter toward the base of a 17-way formation skydive. The reserve deployed normally, and all of the other jumpers were able to avoid the deploying canopy. The jumper’s reserve-ripcord handle had dislodged and was pulled during the exit, but even after reviewing the video, the jumper and others on the load were unable to determine how this happened. Jumpers need to use caution during the ride to altitude and while exiting from the airplane to help ensure that their main-deployment, cutaway and reserve-ripcord handles remain in place.
