Henderson Makes Big-Ways Look Easy

Zach Lewis

Planning and organizing multi-point big-way formations is not as easy as you might think. Even with a first point already designed, coming up with a challenging but doable second point—much less one that is visually attractive—is tough. But Larry Henderson is someone who can sit down and create smooth dives and make it look easy.

Henderson has made use of his dive-planning skills by hosting an invitational big-way event at Skydive Spaceland–Dallas (formerly Skydive Dallas) in Whitewright, Texas, for at least 15 years … but even he is unsure how long it’s been. The most recent Larry Henderson Invitational, held August 3-5, attracted 42 jumpers and two camera flyers. Originally, the drop zone planned to devote two of its Twin Otters to the event, but after a mechanical issue with one of the planes, the DZ chartered a Skyvan for the second aircraft. Both aircraft contained oxygen systems, and the group made 16 jumps from above 17,000 feet. Henderson added some young blood to the lineup this year and did a great job of giving everyone the opportunity to exit from several positions on both aircraft.

DZ Manager Ben Nelson did a great job of keeping an eye on everyone and made sure the event ran smoothly. The staff ran everything flawlessly with the exception of ordering about 40 too many pizzas for dinner one night. It was a great event, and everyone is looking forward to next year. There still may be some pizza left if anyone is hungry.
